Large local LLMs

The main reason people rent an Ultra is memory. A 4-bit quantised model needs roughly 0.5–0.7GB per billion parameters, plus room for the context. By default macOS lets the GPU use roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of unified memory, which on 96GB is enough for a 70B-class model at 4-bit.

Model size (4-bit)Approx. weightsOn a 96GB Ultra
7–8B4–6GBEasy; run several at once
14B7–10GBEasy; long contexts
30–34B15–24GBComfortable
70B class35–49GBFits, with room for context

These are rough figures. Real use depends on the quantisation format, context length and runtime. Serve models with Ollama, llama.cpp's server or MLX, and expose them to your team over an SSH tunnel or your own reverse proxy. For a dedicated serving setup, see Mac Studio LLM hosting.

Advanced users sometimes raise the GPU memory limit with the iogpu.wired_limit_mb setting. Do this with care and leave enough memory for macOS itself.

Fine-tuning small models

96GB also makes local fine-tuning practical for small models. A typical path:

  1. Install MLX and the MLX LM tools with pip.
  2. Prepare your training data as JSONL.
  3. Run LoRA fine-tuning on a 7–8B base model, then evaluate and fuse the adapter.
  4. Serve the result locally with the same tools.

You keep the data on a machine that is assigned only to you, which matters for private datasets. Full fine-tuning of large models is a different scale of work; the Ultra is best for small models and adapters.

Heavy builds

The Ultra is also a serious build machine. Large Xcode workspaces, game engines and C++ codebases benefit from both the chip and the memory:

  • Keep caches for several large projects on the 1TB SSD.
  • Run many runners or parallel test destinations at once.
  • Build with Unity or Unreal without running out of memory during asset imports.

Is the Ultra the right choice?

Choose the Ultra if memory is your limit. If you need a 30B-class model or less, the Mac Studio M5 Max at $529/mo is usually enough. If you need more than one large model online at once, or more throughput, consider a Mac Studio cluster.

Access and setup

After payment we set up the Mac and email you when it is ready; the access details appear under "My Macs" in your account. Most AI users work over SSH and keep a model server running as a launch agent, so it restarts with the machine. Add Screen Sharing or Parsec if you also want the desktop. You install everything yourself: Homebrew, Python, MLX, Ollama and your own tools.

FAQ

Can a Mac Studio M5 Ultra rental run a 70B model?

Yes, a 70B-class model at 4-bit quantisation fits in 96GB with room for context. Very long contexts or higher-precision formats need more memory.

How much does the Mac Studio M5 Ultra cost?

$999 per month on a 12-month term, or $1,199 per month on a 6-month term. It is not available month to month.

Is my data private on the Ultra?

The Mac is a dedicated physical machine assigned only to you. You control the macOS user accounts, files and software on it.

Can I get more than 96GB of memory?

More memory or storage is available on request. Tell us what you need on the contact page.
