Mac mini Cluster
A Mac mini cluster is several dedicated Mac minis working as one pool. It is the most cost-effective way to add macOS capacity: more machines, more jobs at once, and no single point that holds up the whole team.
Why several small Macs instead of one big one
- Parallelism. Four Mac minis run four independent jobs with no contention for disk or memory.
- Isolation. A broken simulator or a stuck job affects one node, not every pipeline.
- Gradual growth. Add one node at a time as the queue grows, and mix terms to match your budget.
- Cost. Nodes start at $119/mo each for a Mac mini M4 on 12 months, or $179/mo for the 24GB M6.

What people run on a Mac mini cluster
Parallel CI
Register each Mac as a self-hosted runner in GitHub Actions, GitLab or Jenkins with the same label. The CI system hands each queued job to the next free node. See GitHub Actions Mac runner and Jenkins macOS build agent.
Test sharding
Split a long test suite across nodes so the wall-clock time falls. A simple approach with Xcode:
# node 1
xcodebuild test -scheme App -only-testing:AppTests/Shard1
# node 2
xcodebuild test -scheme App -only-testing:AppTests/Shard2
In GitHub Actions a matrix with one entry per shard does the same thing. Each node runs its share, and the results are merged in a final job.
Distributed inference
Running one model across several Macs is possible but still young. llama.cpp includes an RPC backend that can spread layers across machines, and MLX has distributed features for multi-machine work. Both depend heavily on the network between nodes and are best treated as experiments. For most teams, running a separate model copy on each node and balancing requests is simpler and more reliable. For large models, a Mac Studio cluster usually makes more sense.
Orchestrating the nodes
You do not need MDM to keep a handful of Macs consistent. Common, lightweight approaches:
- Ansible over SSH. Keep an inventory of nodes and run the same playbook against each: install Xcode versions, Homebrew packages and runner services.
- A bootstrap script plus a Brewfile. One shell script that installs Homebrew, runs
brew bundle, registers the runner and sets up a launch daemon. - Configuration in Git. Version the playbooks and scripts so rebuilding a node is repeatable.
- Health checks. A scheduled job that reports free disk, memory pressure and runner status from each node.
Our Mac mini cluster setup guide walks through a full example.
An example layout
| Node | Plan | Role |
|---|---|---|
| mini-01, mini-02 | Mac mini M6 24GB | Build and archive jobs |
| mini-03, mini-04 | Mac mini M6 16GB | Test shards |
| mini-05 | Mac mini M4 | Lint, small tasks, nightly scripts |
This is only a starting point. Adjust it to your own queue times and project sizes.
Networking between machines
CI runners usually only need outbound connections to your Git host, so they work without any special networking. Workloads where nodes talk to each other, such as distributed inference or shared caches, depend on how the machines are connected. Requirements vary, so tell us what you need and we will discuss the options.
Bulk quotes
You can order nodes one by one on the site. For five or more machines, a mix of plans, or custom memory and storage, ask for a bulk quote on the contact page.
FAQ
How many Macs do I need for a Mac mini cluster?
Two is enough to start. Add nodes when jobs regularly wait in the queue. Many teams settle at three to six.
Are the nodes in a Mac mini cluster shared?
No. Each node is a dedicated physical Mac mini assigned only to you.
Can the machines talk to each other on a private network?
That depends on your requirements. Tell us what you need on the contact page and we will discuss the options.
Can I mix Mac mini models in one cluster?
Yes. Many clusters mix M4, M6 and M5 Pro nodes, with labels to route jobs to the right machines.
